The competitive Super Smash Bros. scene was unexpectedly rocked this week when organizers of the Smash World Tour canceled their 2022 championships, which were scheduled to take place later this month. Nintendo claimed to be the reason for the cancellation of the championships. Now the studio has released a second response to that allegation, claiming that SWT has failed to meet the “high standards” it requires of its partners.

“Any partner we license must meet the high standards we set when it comes to the health and safety of our fans,” Nintendo said in a statement to IGN. (thanks, GamesIndustry.biz). “It is also important that a partner adheres to trademark and IP guidelines and behaves according to professional and organizational best practices.” Nintendo didn’t provide any further information on exactly how SWT failed to follow these guidelines.

Nintendo also pointed out that its decision was in no way influenced by Panda Global. The rival tournament promoter, who maintains a relationship with Nintendo, has been accused of trying to sabotage SWT’s 2022 championships. Interestingly, Nintendo added for the second time that it has not asked to cancel this year’s SWT Championships and that the event scheduled for later this month could have gone ahead.

“The decision to cancel SWT 2022 was and is your own decision,” Nintendo clarified in its statement. The original SWT post announcing the cancellation of the 2022 Championships said it was at Nintendo’s request. The organization also claims that when told it would not be able to hold the championships this month, it asked if it could go ahead with an “unofficial” label, which Nintendo has also declined.

All Nintendo has asked is that SWT’s 2023 events not be officially associated with its brand. However, Nintendo still hasn’t explained exactly why it ended its partnership with SWT. It was only hinted that the organizers would not live up to the company’s high standards, although the details were not disclosed. As it stands, the 2022 SWT Championships will not take place on December 9th and organizers will lose hundreds of thousands of dollars should it remain the case.
