CD Projekt Red has been extremely transparent over the past few months, possibly in an attempt to reclaim some goodwill from its fanbase following Cyberpunk 2077’s disastrous launch. Because of this, we’re aware of a whole host of games the developer has in the works – such as a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 and a new IP codenamed Project Hadar – but we have no idea when they’ll be released. Thankfully, things have become a bit clearer when it comes to the Witcher series.

It was announced some time ago that a new trilogy of Witcher games is in the works, as well as a remake of the original Witcher game from 2007. Again, CD Projekt Red hasn’t announced any release dates for these titles, but we now know roughly what order they’ll appear in, thanks to some comments from CD Projekt Red president and co-CEO Adam Kiciński in a developer’s Q3 financial report (thanks TheGameSpoof).

According to Kiciński, the planned remake of the original Witcher will only appear after The Witcher 4 is released. Kiciński explains that the reason for this is that the Witcher remake can use the technology that is being developed specifically for The Witcher 4, presumably to ensure that the remake matches the graphics of the new game. He says both games are being developed “partially in parallel,” but The Witcher 4 will be the first to be tackled.

“Coming back to The Witcher Remake and when it’s coming, yes it’s coming after Polaris (The Witcher 4) which is a consequence of how we feel about this project,” says Kiciński. “I think The Witcher Remake will be based in large part on technologies from Polaris, so some of it will be developed in parallel with Polaris, but once Polaris comes out, then everything for Polaris will be in its final form, and it will be partially reused in the remake.”

As for when that will be, it’s unlikely we’ll see the game release in the next few years. The Witcher 4 has only recently found its director, and Kiciński said in early October that the development of the title is currently in the earliest stages. He even confirmed that the game will take at least three years to develop before it hits stores, and that’s only if everything goes according to plan.

Considering The Witcher 4’s development isn’t even fully underway yet, that means we’ll likely have to wait even longer for The Witcher Remake, which isn’t surprising considering Geralt voice actor Doug Cockle has yet to be announced was not even contacted to return. Unfortunately, we won’t be getting any more Witcher games for quite a while, but at least we now know that we’ll experience a brand new adventure before we can delve into familiar territory.
