Actor Clarence Gilyard Jr. was also known to be best friends with Walker, Texas Ranger.

Clarence Gilyard Jr.. died this week. He was 66 years old. His death was confirmed by a statement from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he had worked for two decades as a professor of film and theater at the UNLV College of Fine Arts.

“Professor Gilyard was a beacon to all around him. Whenever we asked him how he was doing, he would happily declare that he was ‘blessed!’ But we are truly the ones who have been blessed to have been colleagues and students for so many years. We love you and will miss you very much, Professor G!”

Clarence Gilyard Jr. had started his career in a fighter jet, playing “Sundown”, one of Mavercik’s teammates in Top Gun. After his role in Crystal Coinhe had moved on to the small screen playing an inspector in Matlock. But he left the series in 1993 for a major role, that of Jimmy Trivette, the right arm of Chuck Norris in Walker, Texas Ranger. A job he will keep for 196 episodes.

The causes of his death have not been disclosed.
