[TEST] Sonic Frontier: what is the hedgehog’s foray into the open-world worth?

After two films and a future series, Sonic the Hedgehog is on the rise. The supersonic hedgehog is back in the gaming world with Sonic Frontier. What is this incursion of the SEGA mascot into the open-world universe worth? Verdict!

In search of the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic and his friends crash land on the mysterious Starfall Islands. Our hedgehog finding himself without his friends will have to do everything to find his friends as well as Dr. Robotnik who has also disappeared and who is none other than the person in charge of this merry mess. Indeed, our good old villain has inserted an artificial intelligence in the heart of the island giving a mysterious power to the ancient relics opening a fault called Cyberspace. You will have to travel the five huge Starfall islands to reach the end of your adventure.

After 2D, 3D, 2.5D, the fastest hedgehog in the world is tackling a new genre, the Open-World action-adventure game. You switch from the open world to cyberspace events. The decors, certainly a little empty, are quite varied with green forests through an arid desert or even ancient ruins. We’re a long way from Green Hill. Cyberspace Trials can be found through hidden portals all over the map. Side missions and activities are also available to get out of the linear side of the main adventure.

Apart from the classic levels where you have to run from point A to point B while collecting as many rings as possible, you will have to fight bosses. These are much more than pattern bosses like in the previous games. You will have to be quite strategic and use dodging to get to the end of the fights. Fights that are quite exhilarating it must be admitted. The extent of the map is revealed via points a bit like Far Cry or Assassin’s Creed already do, deja vu but an effective technique.

On the gameplay side, the regulars will not be out of place. Sonic is heading as in the previous opuses but offers its share of novelties. Sonic evolves in the game thanks to a skill tree that offers him new moves such as dodges, parries, counters, combos and the new Run-loop skill. You will have no less than 12 skills to unlock during the adventure.

Side life, Sonic Frontier offers no less than a good fifteen hours of play to overcome the last boss. To finish the game 100% and try to get the precious platinum trophy, you will have to play around ten extra hours.

Graphically, we are not going to hide it from you, we are somewhat disappointed. We expected a lot from this new Sonic especially on Next-Gen. We can see that the title is really dated. It is worth admitting that an Open World requires a lot of res and this is a first for the team. That said for a first excursion into the world of the Open World, it’s still reasonable. In addition, on next-gen consoles, we are offered the choice between fluidity (60fps) or high resolution (4K), which does not displease us as some games do not offer this option. For a Sonic, we obviously opted for fluidity.

To conclude, Sonic Frontiers is not the long-awaited revolutionary game but is a good compromise. Even if it is very classic in travel and does not invent the Open World either, this new formula works rather well. We would have liked a slightly larger graphic gap, but let’s give time to Sonic Team to enrich this new type of game in the range of the blue hedgehog. Generally Sonic Frontiers offers a rather nice adventure for insiders and newcomers.

Sonic Frontiers is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch et PC via Steam.
