UK sales: Black Friday physical game sales down 15%

As usual, gamesindustry.biz has published the UK physical sales figures for each week. However, the figures for this occasion are peculiar, since they are strongly influenced by the discounts related to Black Friday.

The best-selling game during the previous week was FIFA 23, whose sales increased by 95%, thanks to several discounts and its inclusion in different packs with consoles. Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Purple, which led sales last week, have fallen slightly: Pokémon Scarlet is now in third position, and Pokémon Purple is in sixth. They have experienced a 64% drop in their second week, compared to 72% for Pokémon Arceus Legends or 58% for Pokémon Sword and Shield.

The figures indicate that sales of physical games in the UK during Black Friday were down 15% compared to the previous period. It is not the first year that we have seen a similar drop: last year, sales also fell by 10%. The figures, yes, do not include digital sales or console sales. Even so, the impact of the reductions in titles such as Sonic Frontiers, which debuted in tenth position in its opening week and has risen to seventh after being significantly reduced, has been noticed.

Here’s a list of the top ten best-selling video games in UK stores over the past week, with the previous week’s rank in brackets:

  1. FIFA 23 (3)
  2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (5)
  3. Pokemon Purple (1)
  4. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe (8)
  5. God of War Ragnarok (4)
  6. Pokemon Scarlet (2)
  7. Sonic Frontiers (10)
  8. Nintendo Switch Sports (9)
  9. Just Dance 2023 (New)
  10. Animal Crossing New Horizons (11)
